Hair loss

If you notice a patch of missing hair on your cat this can be worrying. Hair loss (alopecia) can have many causes and always warrants investigation by your vet. Some causes of hair loss are transmissible to humans, although this is unusual, so this is definitely not a time to delay that visit to the vet!

Unusual symptoms to watch out for

It's not always easy to detect when your cat is unwell. Cats are very good at hiding illnesses as a protective instinct and tend to shy away from contact if they're feeling under the weather. It's important to keep an eye open for the telltale signs of common conditions, and a good idea to complete a monthly health checklist at home.

Harmful substances and foods

There are many food and non-food substances, including plants, which can be potentially poisonous for your cat. Some of these will be obvious to most owners but others will not. For example, some foods and medicines eaten by humans with no ill effects can be very toxic and in some cases life-threatening for cats.
