To promote pet adoption by leveraging partnerships

At Purina, we believe that every pet deserves a loving home, which is why we've partnered with a number of organisations to help support pet adoption.

Our Regional goal

By 2025, we will work with our pet adopton partners to promote best practice and help to improve adoption rates.

Our Commitment

Why it's important

We have always supported pet adoption. Finding loving homes for pets is something that we are passionate about and that's why it was part of our original commitments in 2016. In some countries, we have seen that the Covid-19 pandemic and cost of living crisis has exacerbated the issue of pet abandonment with animal shelters being left to grapple with the fallout. So, our commitment is more important than ever. That's why we will continue to work with our local and new adoption partners to enable pet adoption and promote the sharing of best practices.

We have been supporting Cats Protection, the UK’s largest feline cat welfare charity, for over 35 years. We are extremely proud of the long partnership we’ve created to support the cats in their care and to help the charity in their vision - a world where every cat is treated with kindness and an understanding of its needs. You can find out more about their work here.

We also support the DSPCA (Dublin Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) which is the Republic of Ireland’s oldest animal charity. Every year it rescues and cares for animals across Ireland who have been abandoned or subjected to abuse and neglect.

Purina has been a proud supporter of the Society for over 10 years and you can find out more about their work here.

Our point of view

At Purina, we love pets and passionately believe in the benefits that pet ownership bring to an individual and society as a whole. While pet lovers couldn’t be without their pets, and the majority of pets around the world are well loved and cared for, due to economic and social factors, thousands of dogs, cats and other animals are abandoned each year and the numbers are rising.

We recognise we are in a unique position to help support adoption. Across Europe, we support pet adoption programmes to help improve pet adoption rates. We provide food to adoption centres and support many adoption awareness events and educational campaigns, which highlight the benefits and responsibilities of pet adoption. Pet food donations for our partners are an important part of our support and this became even more critical during the Covid-19 pandemic when funding to shelters was affected. When adoption centres were most in need of help, we donated millions of pet meals to our adoption partners and others in need of help and support.

We know that the pet-human bond has many benefits, which is why we're looking for tangible solutions to enable adoption and create richer lives for pets and the people who love them.
