Say Hello to Rey
German Shepherd Dog, 4 years old
My favourite thing about Rey is...
Her never faltering loyalty and yes love! Their pack mentality is strong and they like to keep all their pack in sight. From the day we picked Rey 8 weeks old up from breeder. Rey has been well socialised with people other dogs, puppies and strange objects. Rey is the 5th Shepherd I’ve owned in my 63 years. Early socialisation, kind but firm training and learning how to relax is a must. 👍🏻🐕
The biggest challenge with Rey is...
None now really. As a younger dog she did not eat as much as I thought she should. But vet said she would rather see them leaner for good health. She eats well now I do not change her diet by much as I find sticking to a good quality food is best for there well being and health.
The most surprising thing about owning a German Shepherd Dog is...
How much uyou learn but also they are a lot of work. Exercise, feeding, training. And realising how much work goes into owning a well mannered sociable dog. A dog that can be laid back when requested. It’s all down to hard work in pups early days and understanding of the owners. I don’t think a GSD is suitable for a person who has no previous experience of dogs. Best for experienced owner.!
What I wish I’d known about German Shepherd Dogs is...
Be kind and gentle. Understand the dog. Shepherds would be with you 24 hours a day. Exercise is vital but learn them to chill is
Did you know?
Long before Lassie, the first canine film star was a German Shepherd Dog known as Rin Tin Tin who was rescued as a puppy in 1918 from a World War I battlefield by Lee Duncan, an American soldier. He made 26 films, had his own radio show and even his own private chef!
