Canine EN Gastrointestinal Can FAQs
Our improved formula is now suitable for both adult dogs and puppies. It’s made with gentle, easy‑to‑digest ingredients and enriched with prebiotics to support healthy digestion. Below you’ll find answers to our most frequently asked questions to help you understand the updates and their benefits.
What has changed?
We’ve reformulated to add fish oil, the prebiotic fibre inulin, vitamin E, and have adjusted the formula to make it suitable for both adults and puppies. As part of the recipe change, we have used some different parts of the same animal species.
How is it now suitable for puppies?
We have added additional minerals and fish oil which means the food now includes everything needed to support your puppy’s growth. The new recipe will also be available in our smaller 195g cans, perfect for puppies and dogs with smaller appetites.
Why have the animal derived ingredients changed?
We have used different parts of the same animal species to help create a mousse with a softer texture that’s still as nutritious and tasty as the old recipe. All the animal proteins are from the same animal species as the previous recipe.
Why did you add inulin?
Inulin is a prebiotic which is well studied, including in dogs. Prebiotics help to feed the good bacteria in the gut, supporting the microbiome balance. A healthy microbiome is important for gastrointestinal health in dogs. Our dry Gastrointestinal EN already contains inulin, so this change ensures that your dog will continue to benefit from this prebiotic source if they prefer mixed feeding.
Why do sodium and potassium now appear on the label – are these new ingredients?
Sodium and potassium are important electrolytes for your dog’s health and have always existed in the recipe. Regulations require that they are present on the label for products that claim to nutritionally support intestinal absorptive disorders, such as the updated canine Gastrointestinal EN wet.
How did you achieve the softer texture?
The softer texture has been achieved thanks to a careful adjustment in ingredients. It continues to deliver the same great taste, nutrition and quality that you and your pets expect from Pro Plan Veterinary Diets. A softer texture means you’ll benefit from easier handling, as well as being able to mix in or insert pills more easily.
Why does the texture vary between batches?
There are small variations in the water content and properties of some natural ingredients. This does not affect the quality or safety of the food but might vary the texture. The mousse may also become firmer over time in the tin.
My dog takes longer to eat the new recipe product / I’ve noticed a change in how they eat / The new recipe is stickier
Based on feedback from pet owners and veterinary professionals, the new recipe is softer. This might change the way that your dog chews and swallows the food, but don’t worry, it has no impact on its quality or safety.
Why is the mousse darker than it used to be?
The natural colour of some of the new animal-based ingredients gives the mousse a darker appearance. We’ve used some different parts of the same animal species to help achieve a softer mousse that’s just as nutritious and tasty as the previous recipe.
Do these changes affect product performance, digestibility, or palatability? Will it change my dog’s stool quality?
The new recipe is designed to help support digestion in dogs. We have conducted extensive trials to confirm that the updated recipe maintains the same great taste and digestibility properties as before. We can confirm there should be no effect on your dog’s stool quality as a result of the recipe change.
