Purina® DentaLife® is innovative daily treat that cleans as your dog chews for healthy teeth and gums and fresh breath
As in humans, plaque and tartar can also have an affect on a dogs well being over the course of their lives. That is why regular dental care should begin at an early age and be considered as an ongoing part of a dog’s routine health maintenance program. This is not only important to help keep teeth and gums healthy, but also for systemic health, as well. Dental conditions are very common in pets. But with proper attention to dental care, the incidence of dental conditions may be reduced.
Your veterinarian may suggest a number of different dental care practises for your dog. The first will be regular brushing of your dog’s teeth. Dogs should have their teeth cleaned regularly, to help mimimise dental health conditions.
Another practise your vet may suggest is to play regularly with your dog using toys that help to remove plaque. Rope toys are a great example of a toy that can help remove plaque. You should try to play with your dog using a rope toy regularly to help support their dental health. Purina® DentaLife® can also be a part of this daily routine as its dental efficacy tests have scientifically proven that it helps reduce the amount of tartar build-up on the surface of dogs’ teeth. Learn more about DentaLife® and the benefits it can have for your dog’s dental health here.
Purina® DentaLife® works thanks to a mechanical action, which promotes chewing and physical “brushing” on the surface of a dog’s teeth. The combination of product texture, shape and dimension of the chew allows it to clean even the hard to reach teeth at the back of your dog’s mouth. This is where teeth are naturally more vulnerable to plaque and tartar build-up.
Purina® DentaLife® dental efficacy tests have scientifically proven that it helps reduce the amount of tartar build-up on the surface of dogs’ teeth when given to your dog daily.
Purina® DentaLife® chews are available in a number of different sizes depending on whether you have a small, medium or large dog. Each chew has a delicious chicken flavour. Discover more about Purina® DentaLife® chews here.
Purina® DentaLife® chews slow the accumulation of plaque and tartar. Therefore you may notice less yellowish tartar build-up and improved breath.
Dental efficacy studies have demonstrated beneficial effects of Purina® DentaLife® products when feeding one stick daily for a period of 28 days.
In these studies, beneficial effects were observed in two teeth categories located in the back of the mouth (premolars and molars). These teeth are more difficult to check and clean as they are found on the back of a dog’s mouth. Purina® DentaLife® targets these teeth through the mechanical action of chewing.
There are a number of different vitamins that dogs need to live a healthy life.
These vitamins include:
- Vitamin D, Calcium and Phosphorus help maintain your dog’s strong teeth as they encourage bone metabolism. A strong jawbone leads to the maintenance of strong teeth, both of which are an important part of a dog’s dental health.
- Vitamin A helps cell proliferation and renewal. This is particularly good for growth and also to maintain the integrity of oral tissues.
- Vitamin E is an important nutrient that supports healthy cell function. It is essential for dog’s muscles and helps aid repair of tissues.
Each Purina® DentaLife® chew contains both Vitamin D and calcium to help make teeth strong. Discover the full list of ingredients found in our chews on our product page.
We recommend you start giving a dog Purina® DentaLife® chews after they are one year of age or older. Feeding the a dog under the age of one a DentaLife chew daily could cause the puppy to eat over their daily calorie requirement.
If your dog weighs less than 7 kg, we do not recommend you feed them the product because they might be at risk of over-feeding. This means that some toy breeds may not fit the requiremtns for this product.
Purina® DentaLife® chews should be fed to your dog once, daily. There is no specific time of day chews should be fed to your dog. Follow directions on the label for recommended feeding amount and guidelines.
Our chews contain less than 10% of your dog’s recommended daily calorie intake. This means it is not necessary to reduce their meal.
However, it’s important to make sure you are feeding your dog the right DentaLife® stick for their size. Feeding a small dog a large DentaLife® chew will not be good for their mouth and provides them with more calories than their size/breed needs. Take a look at the back of DentaLife® packets for more information about which size of chew your dog needs.
If your dog’s gums begin to bleed whilst chewing Purina® Dentalife® they may have a dental health condition. Bleeding gums are common in conditions such as gingivitus. For more information about gingivitus and how it may affect your dogs dental health take a look at our article here.
If your dog experiences any oral changes such as bleeding, we advise you to check with your vet the severity of this gum inflammation. Your vet will advise you if a dental cleaning is required or if you can continue to use dental chews.
Dogs are considered senior after seven years of age. Purina® DentaLife® is suitable for them as long as they have good strong teeth that can handle chewing. If your dog has a dental condition that affects the way they chew, you should check with your vet before allowing them to eat a Purina® DentaLife® chew.
Bad breath in dogs is one of the first signs that something could be wrong with your dog’s dental health. Bad breath happens when the mouth experiences tartar build-up, leading to bad bacteria metabolism which produces odourant compounds. These odorant compounds are what give a dog its bad breath.
Whilst there are not any specific ingredients added to help freshen breath. Each chew does help reduce the tartar accumulation and amount of bacteria in a dog’s oral cavity. This accumulation of tartar is what promotes bad breath.
If you’re unsure about your pet’s dental health or have any questions, speak to your vet for further information and advice. To find out more about Purina® DentaLife® and its positive effects on your dog’s health and well being, check out our product page.
Our dental chews are one of the ways to help clean a dog’s teeth, aside from brushing. This is because each DentaLife® stick promotes chewing in hard to reach places. This chewing helps to remove plaque and tartar which if left to build up could cause dental conditions.
This being said our chews should not be the only form of dental health care you give your dog. We also advise you take other precautions and measures to make sure their dental health is the best it can be. Brushing is the best way to help take care of your dog’s dental health. If you’re looking for advice on brushing your dog’s teeth check out our brushing guide.
Each Purina® DentaLife® chew is full of wholesome ingredients made from wheat and corn. They are low in fat and do not have any added sugar in them. There are also no added articicial flavourings or colourings added to our chews. Check out the full break down of ingredients on our product page.
Purina® DentaLife® sticks are completely safe dog chews. They have been designed by experts to have a chewy porous texture, ridged design and delicious chicken flavour. As long as your dog is at least one year old and has a full set of teeth they will be able to chew these treats.
It is important to remember that if your dog does have gum conditions or a significant number of teeth missing, you should check with your vet before feeding them dental chew treats like DentaLife®.
