Get to know Skylar
Australian Shepherd Dog, 3 years old
My favourite thing about Skylar is...
Skylar is a typical crazy Aussie who is all about the fun. She’s ace at learning new tricks and posing for photos with her Mum. We do agility together but she’s way faster than me so she’s learning distance control. We are still hoping she will make a sheepdog of some kind, however at the moment she just wants to chase the sheep in any direction apart from the right one!
The biggest challenge with Skylar is...
She was a lockdown pup and so her first introductions to people and other dogs after lockdown were very excitable and hard to control. Using her favourite treats we have been able to control her reactions and she now walks to heel as we pass by other people and dogs,.
The most surprising thing about owning a Australian Shepherd Dog is...
They are the most loving dogs I’ve ever known. Australian Shepherds need to be on your lap 24/7 so if you don’t want a dog that’s in your face then don’t choose an Aussie. But they love to please so much and are so easy to train with positive rewards. Although they are a shepherd dog, unlike the collie they don’t herd your children constantly or nip at your heels.
What I wish I’d known about Australian Shepherd Dogs is...
I wish I had known that the majority of Aussies in the UK are show lines and so don’t have much interest in working sheep or cattle. I would like to own one that shows an interest in herding. I also never realised a dog could be a natural Bob tail until i was introduced to the Aussie. I’m still not sure how I feel about a dog with no tail but both mine have tails anyway.
Did you know?
The Australian Shepherds are often born with heterochromia, meaning that they have two different coloured eyes.
