Meet Mya
Border Collie, 5 years old
My favourite thing about Mya is...
She is part giraffe! One parent short coated, the other long coated - makes her look a bit unusual and absolutely adorable.. She’s very smart. The look in her eyes melts my heart. She is well trained and obedient although like most dogs she has her moments…She loves to charge around outdoors like a puppy but would happily live inside the fire grate when it’s cold. She loves people and relishes life
The biggest challenge with Mya is...
About two years ago Mya started developing a very upset tummy. After veterinary research it turned out she has massive food allergies. The vets suggested the only two diets she could tolerate. I opted for Purina h/a which I buy in both dry and moist forms. It’s proving very expensive. Poor Mya misses all the treats she used to love but the h/a is a life saver. Wish I could find h/a treats.
The most surprising thing about owning a Border Collie is...
Mya’s our fourth BC so there are not many surprises now - although it is remarkable how different dogs of the same breed can be. She is a curious mix. She can be rather nervous around some other dogs. Like many dogs she is owner and toy possessive. However she thinks all humans belong to her.and melts hearts with ease, even some people who are afraid of dogs. BC.s certainly keep you on your toes
What I wish I’d known about Border Collies is...
Border collies need to work and be active, even if that work is some sort of fun activity. Our previous three were loved, fed and exercised sufficiently. I realise now they would have had richer lives doing agility or activities similar to the ones Mya relishes. Knowing in advance about potential joint issues with such active dogs would have been helpful but ours all lived long happy lives.
