How to feed kittens

When it comes to feeding kittens, the most important thing to remember is that they have specific nutritional needs. Unlike older cats, they still have a lot of growing to do, and their food needs to provide them with everything they need for their development.

Many owners buy their kitten once they have been weaned, but if you have a newborn who is still drinking their mother’s milk, they won’t need solid food until they’re four to six weeks old.

Should kittens have wet or dry food?

Kittens have small stomachs, but use a lot of energy relative to their size. For this reason, it’s best to feed them small amounts on a very regular basis.

If their food is being left for them to ‘graze’ on, remember to check and replace it around four times a day, to ensure it is always fresh.

How much food should I feed my kitten?

As above, kittens should be fed small amounts at regular intervals. All foods are slightly different, so make sure you follow the instructions on the back of the packet.

If you’re not sure how much food your kitten should be eating, ask your vet for tailored advice.

When are kittens ready to eat solid food?

When kittens are ready to eat solid food, they should be given a specially formulated kitten food, such as Purina One Kitten. This is because kittens have specific nutritional needs that may not be adequately met by adult cat food. Neither should kittens eat food meant for humans, nor puppy/dog food, as these won’t provide them with everything they need for their ongoing health.

Purina One Kitten supports the healthy development of vital functions, are highly digestible, and help support oral health.

Kittens can eat either wet or dry food, as long as it has been specially formulated for their age.

It’s worth noting that dry food can help keep your kitten’s teeth healthy, as it can help remove plaque as they chew. However, they may also drink more than kittens who eat wet food, as the water in wet food will count towards their daily water intake.

Can kittens have treats?

When you’re feeding a kitten, their food should provide them with everything they need for a nutritionally complete and balanced diet, so there is no real need for treats.

Most cat treats aren’t designed for kittens, which means they may not be suitable – for example, they may contain more calories than your kitten needs. For this reason, it’s best to wait until they are an adult before giving them treats.
