Get to know Ozzy
Beagle, 13 years old
My favourite thing about Ozzy is...
He is very funny and silly. He loves me and my niece Violet and enjoys cuddles. He lives for his walks and his sense of smell is amazing. He is not at all aggressive with other dogs and gets on well with our cats. He loves to sunbathe on our patio.
The biggest challenge with Ozzy is...
He doesn't really interact with my husband or children, he only likes certain people. He is very food-orientated; very! He has broken into fridges and freezers. Our current one is only a year old and has teeth marks on the side. He is very smart and can open sealed bottles of Caesar salad dressing and climb up shelves etc to search for food but has been hard to train.
The most surprising thing about owning a Beagle is...
They are very clever but don't really care about pleasing you, so he has been very hard to train. But Ozzy has good recall, he will panic if he loses sight of me unlike his mum who would disappear for hours apparently!
What I wish I’d known about Beagles is...
Just how relentless they are with food, he could steal half a sack of dog food and look thoroughly miserable and uncomfortable for days after, but will still do it again if he had the opportunity. You have to think like a beagle and outsmart them!
Did you know?
The heavy, velvety earflaps actually improve a Beagle’s ability to pick up a scent, as when their nose is pointed to the ground, the long ears create micro-air currents which help better conduct the scent to their nose.
