My favourite thing about Theo is...
Theo is an incredibly confident, sociable pup with boundless energy. He loves to clown around, play, chase and be chased, and thrives on interaction with dogs and people. When he eventually tires in the evening, he turns into the perfect little lapdog, and loves a good cuddle.
The biggest challenge with Theo is...
His boundless energy! It can be time consuming to tire him out both mentally and physically. He also has the classic Dachshund stubbornness; recall training has been a challenge, his nose wins every time. Also, he can be very barky… good job he’s cute!
The most surprising thing about owning a Dachshund (Miniature Smooth-Haired) is...
Big dog energy - he has no problem keeping up with his Labrador siblings. Also, how popular the breed is - I had no idea the reaction we’d get on walks, regular shouts of “sausage!” and frequently being stopped so people can speak to him. Luckily he loves the attention!
What I wish I’d known about Dachshunds (Miniature Smooth-Haired) is...
Loud barks, and much destruction - toys with stuffing are shredded within minutes; opt for rope toys, nylabones, kong type toys for strong chewers. Also, if you can, provide a designated digging spot (or a sandpit) because the urge to dig is strong!
