Become Acquainted with Molly
Shih Tzu, 11 years old
My favourite thing about Molly is...
She has a very sweet nature, and is everyone’s friend. She is generally quiet but certainly not shy, and since coming to us last August she really has blossomed. She has grown a beautiful coat and thinks she’s a puppy again! Molly doesn’t ask for much but I know she appreciates every little comfort we can give her.
The biggest challenge with Molly is...
Because she was used excessively for breeding by unscrupulous people, she had a lot of health issues, mainly due to malnourishment and neglect. She was seriously underweight and needed a lot of care. She had produced umpteen litters and had a very saggy undercarriage!
The most surprising thing about owning a Shih Tzu is...
How much they can sleep! Molly snores like an old drunk too!
What I wish I’d known about Shih Tzus is...
They are very stubborn! Not easy to train, but very good at training humans! They can be a bit picky with food too.

An original Chinese breed standard for the Shih Tzu must be the most romantic ever written. It says (among other things) that they should have the head of a lion, the face of an owl, the eyes of a dragon, the tongue of a peony petal, teeth like grains of rice, ears like palm leaves, the back of a tiger, the tail of a phoenix and the movement of a goldfish.
