Purina’s donation feeds 1 million meals to homeless cats

3 min read

This is Karen, just one of the cats in Cats Protection’s care, looking for her fur-ever home. Karen is one of four tiny kittens who were found dumped in a cardboard box on the Ashdown Forest, a beauty spot just a short distance from Cats Protection’s National Cat Adoption Centre.

Desperately in need of care, the four-week-old kittens were discovered by a dog walker just a couple of days before heavy rain lashed the area. Far too young to be away from their mother, all four were dehydrated, hungry and in need of veterinary attention when they arrived at the centre.

As well as being abandoned, the kittens were all found to have deformed stumpy tails and Karen has an abnormally formed leg which may need to be amputated. Karen and her other three siblings – Keith, Keiran and Kiri - all survived their ordeal and are now being cared for by staff at the centre until they are old enough to be rehomed.

The tiny kitten loves Felix kitten in jelly and Purina Pro Plan kitten biscuits and is just one of the 144 cats and kittens at Cats Protection’s National Cat Adoption Centre being fed by the important donation.

Pet experts Purina, part of Nestlé and located at the company’s base in Gatwick, have been supporting the UK's largest feline welfare charity, Cats Protection, for an incredible 37 years. This month, Purina has donated £100,000 to the charity, to fund the equivalent of 1 million meals to help feed cats in their care.

At Purina we passionately believe that pets are people are better together. As part of our commitment to strengthening the pet-human bond, we’re delighted to be a long-term partner to Cats Protection, supporting their brilliant work in caring for cats all over the county. “We know just how important good nutrition is for pets – and we’re pleased that this donation will help Cats Protection in the work they do, giving many thousands of cats the best chance to live happy and healthy lives in their new forever homes.

Nearly 150 cats and kittens at the centre get through at least 300 meals every day, including Purina EN wet and dry food for cats and kittens with an upset stomach.

We’re so grateful to Purina, our long-term partner for helping us ensure kittens like these get all the help they need to recover. This donation will go a long way in ensuring that cats and kittens will have the nutrition they need. “This was a truly sad case, where four defenceless kittens had been dumped in a cardboard box. It’s so incredibly lucky they were found, as they would not have survived much longer. “The team at our National Cat Adoption Centre have done an amazing job caring for them, helping them to recover and giving them the love, care and attention they need. They’re all now thriving – full of mischief and fun.
