Purina Europe is announcing its first carbon reduced pet food range, Purina ONE DualNature.  This carbon reduction work is a step towards  Nestlé’s wider ambition of reducing its carbon emissions by 50% by 2030.

So far, the range has successfully reduced its carbon footprint by 15.7% compared to a 2019 baseline*. The reduction has been based on a Life Cycle Assessment which measures the full environmental impact of products.

Purina ONE DualNature has reduced its impact by making changes to its manufacturing, recipes, logistics and packaging.  For example, by buying renewable electricity for factories where the range is made and selecting ingredients with the right nutrients and a lower carbon impact. The changes have been verified by South Pole, an external organisation which verifies the greenhouse gas emissions reduction projects and strategies of companies, in line with the most up-to-date climate science.
Adjustments have been made without compromising the nutritional value, quality and taste of Purina ONE DualNature.

Fabio Degli Esposti, Marketing Director at Purina Europe, said: “At Purina, we’re committed to producing healthy, nutritious pet food that you can trust. But that’s not all. We believe the health of our environment is as important as providing high quality pet food products.

“Purina ONE DualNature is the first Purina product range that has announced a reduction of its carbon footprint, but it’s just the beginning. Purina Europe is striving to contribute towards Nestlé’s wider ambition of reducing its CO2 emissions by 50% by 2030.

Our journey goes on and we’ll be working to further reduce our greenhouse gas emissions over the coming time, so that pet owners can confidently choose products that contribute positively to both their pets and the environment. ” The range contains natural ingredients spirulina or cranberry and comes in a variety of meat and fish flavours. Spirulina is a natural ingredient known for its health benefits. Purina ONE DualNature Salmon with Spirulina is formulated to help support a cat's healthy immune function. Cranberries are well known in human food as healthful food due to their high nutrient and antioxidant content. Purina ONE Dual Nature Chicken with Cranberry, with added fish oil, helps support a cat’s healthy urinary tract.

Logistically, where the infrastructure exists, pet food products are transported between countries using multimodal transport - a combination of road and rail systems – to avoid only road transport.

Purina ONE DualNature has also moved to mono-material packaging, which can be recycled in stores in the UK and at kerbside in Ireland.  By 2025, Purina expects more than 95% of its packaging to be designed for recycling and will continue to work towards achieving 100%.

To support the circular economy, Purina Europe has prioritised reducing the use of virgin plastic in the packaging process for the range. Purina ONE DualNature’s bags have been made with 40% recycled plastic. The recycled material of the bags has been allocated using the ISCC certified mass balance approach**.

Purina ONE DualNature provides high quality nutrition to support a cat’s health and will continue to work on carbon reduction actions, for a better today and tomorrow. The range is being launched in selected countries across Europe.
